Column backflushing is an analytical method in which a fluid
switching platform reverses the flow through the column. This
allows automatic clean up of the column without disconnection
in situations where sample matrix is trapped on the head of
the column. The reversed flow permits the compounds to be
eluted in a shorter period of time rather than force the highly
retained compound through the full length of the column.
For automated column backflushing, connect a Two-Position,
Six-Port platform, used as a switching platform, to the system
in place of the column between the autosampler (or injector)
and the detector. The illustration shows the column connecting
to the Two-Position, Six-Port platform and a jumper tube to
enable flow reversal. Simply switching the platform changes
the direction of flow through the column only. Choosing the
appropriate tubing size is an important factor to minimize
volume added to the system that could increase dispersion
